Vermont

Vermont may be the sixth-smallest state in the United States, but its picturesque beauty and laid-back charms offer an outsized New England experience. Vermont has something for every type of traveler: miles of open highway and stunning seasonal foliage for road-trippers, quaint weekend getaways for couples, world-class ski resorts for families, and authentic local cuisine for foodies.

Thanks to the majestic Green Mountain range, which extends south to north for nearly 250 miles, Vermont is home to some of the best alpine areas in the Northeast. Both skiers and snowboarders will find worthwhile runs in classic mountain towns such as Stowe, Killington, Stratton, and Burlington. Outdoor activities can also be enjoyed during warmer months—hiking, mountain biking, zip-lining, and kayaking are just some of the adrenaline-pumping experiences.

Travelers who prefer more leisurely pursuits can check out culinary epicenters such as Montpelier, where sampling Vermont’s famous maple syrup and cheddar cheese is a requisite (and therefore guilt-free) activity.

Summertime in Vermont Ski Country

Summertime in Vermont Ski Country

The snow may be long gone, but at many of Vermont’s mountain resorts, the lifts—and the good times—keep cranking. Over the last decade these five ski havens have found new life.

Waitsfield anchors one end of the Mad River Valley, where you’ll find the ski areas Mad River Glen and Sugarbush.

Sweet but also surprising: sort of like many Green Mountain ski towns themselves. Jeffersonville is the home of Smugglers' Notch; Stowe, of the resort of the same name.

Vermont Summer Road Trip

Northern Vermont is a family-friendly playground with a topography that wows.

To the west, Lake Champlain’s blue-green waters create a border with New York, reflecting the towering shadows of the Adirondacks on one shore, and on the other the emerald Green Mountains. For centuries the lake served as the lifeblood of local Native American tribes and captured the imaginations of passing explorers. It was also a pivotal area during the Revolutionary War. Today the landscape is dotted with quaint burgs offering a smorgasbord of activities. Here, an insider’s guide to summer—kid-approved.
